Spirit Bear

Pyrography on veneer.  9 x 12

Prints and Cards of Spirit Bear can be purchased at Fine Art America.

This wood burning was specially made as a gift for my Aunt and Uncle’s 50th Wedding Anniversary. They live in Hamburg, Germany and have been to visit many times. The highlight is always a trip to the Rockies. My Uncle Horst has always wanted to see a bear, but never has. Some things are best left unseen.

I decided to make Spirit Bear in honor of his wish. The scene is composed of a lone Grizzly standing on the shore in front ot Spirit Island in Maligne Lake, near Jasper, Alberta. The artwork is actually the top of a serving tray.

When I started making some art with the intent of selling it I thought an interesting angle would be to have ‘functional’ art like trays and coasters and boxes. While many of the recipe boxes and DVD holders have been put to use, I’ve been told by purchasers of coasters and trays that the owners wouldn’t dream of using them that way for fear of damage.

I’ll take that as a gracious compliment to my work, but also as a lesson in my lack of marketing prowess.

About Chris Wulff

I like to make pictures. Sometimes they move across the screen, sometimes they move you. I draw with fire on wood, with my finger on a phone, with a keyboard and fancy filters and sometimes even with a pencil on paper. I use a camera to capture what I see and my imagination to capture what I can't see.
